The secretary-general of the United Nations (UNSG or UNSECGEN) is the de facto head of the United Nations who oversees the United Nations Secretariat, one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, which also represents all 193 nations on the global stage. While the president of the Security Council chairs its meeting, the secretary-general acts as the Security Council's executive officer who oversees the implementation of its decisions and mandates.

The role of the secretary-general and of the secretariat is laid out by Chapter XV (Articles 97 to 101) of the United Nations Charter. However, the office's qualifications, selection process and tenure are open to interpretation; they have been established by custom.
